Imagine what you have to enter for a mediocre complicated table. To get bold (underline, color, etc.) you must enter the right commands, like this: \b a bold text \b. That's not because the editor sucks (although it does), but because the input for a LaTeX document must be a plain text file. You type in your text, just as I'm doing now in this forum's blasted editor - but you cannot use the editor's handy Bold button, or (tee-hee) its Underline text or Color text buttons. TeX (of which LaTeX is a descendant/sibling/cousin) is not your typical command line tool either. InDesign is not your typical GUI unlike moving stuff around on your desktop, you are supposed to create something as well. If you have no clue at all: the difference is between moving a mouse and typing commands - a GUI vs a command line tool. What is the difference between InDesign and LaTeX? You will know a lot more about writing style sheets in raw text editors by the time you're done. If your collaborators are already intermediate-to-advanced users of LaTeX, then I'd say that it'd be worth it to try to scramble up that steep, steep learning curve. My knowledge of computer languages is limited-I know how to use XMLmind well but I don't know how to write the style sheets that it uses. I know how to use XMLmind but I just really prefer to work with InDesign. But hey, maybe they're all top-notch developers in addition to being computational linguists. Another benefit in a faster growing oyster was that it could reach market size before being vulnerable to particular types of parasites like the one causing Dermo disease ( Perkinsus marinus). Instead of utilising its sugar reserves of glucose and glycogen for gamete production, and reducing its meat content by as much as 70%, the sterile oyster, it was thought, could be freed to harness this energy for meat and shell growth, thus reducing the time to cultivate a marketable oyster. ![]() The idea of growing brood stock in hatcheries was not new but producing a sterile oyster was, one that would be denied nature’s most basic function, reproduction, so that meat content, flavour and texture could be improved. It was important to find ways to make fish grow more quickly in the colder waters, to overcome the problems of erratic spawning at such low temperatures and to make more money by producing shellfish for consumption the whole year round. Darling Marine Center, overlooking the Damariscotta River, on the Maine coast in North Eastern America, where in 1979 marine biologists at the University of Maine were working on methods to help improve the local shellfish industry. The narrative begins in a wooded, hilltop research centre, now the Ira C. So this was the scene when a young and ambitious student set about trying to create a hybrid oyster, one which had never existed in nature. The first commercial oyster seed hatchery opened on the US west coast in 1967, but like most hatcheries was beset with various biological problems. Selective breeding and artificial rearing of oyster spat in hatcheries were seen as ways to compensate for the disappearance of wild stocks and unpredictability of spawning in colder climates by providing an almost limitless source of spat for cultivation. But most of the work only got off the ground after the 2 nd World War. The first experimental hatcheries on a larger scale were started in the 1930’s, in Conwy, Wales (UK) under first Herbert Cole (1911-1984) and later Peter Walne (1926-1978) and in Milford, Connecticut (US) under Victor Loosanoff (1899-1987). But science was generally slow to latch on. His was the age of the first hatcheries which were established to study and allow fish spawn in artificial environments. One of its pioneers, known in France as le père de la pisciculture, Victor Coste (1807-1873) was originally professor of embryology, and was instrumental in spreading interest in the methods of artificial collection of wild spat from oysters. ![]() ![]() Right from the beginning, science has endeavoured to involve itself in aquaculture. Aquaculture was seen as a way to buy good publicity and acquire a brand as a caring company. However, not all aquaculture is sustainable, and in a recent book by Colin Nash, The History of Aquaculture (2011), a pile of evidence is amassed of the unsavoury involvement of the nuclear power industry and multinational chemical conglomerates like Union Carbide, Dow Chemical and Sun Oil in aquaculture during the 1960/70’s which had devastating consequences for the marine environment. Aquaculture is seen as an economic and environmental necessity to safeguard the finite resources of the seas. Stocks have fallen dramatically and fishing has now become far more regulated. Nowadays, the tragedy of all this naivety, on the one hand and greed, on the other, is only too apparent. Apart from France, most countries failed to introduce any viable system of regulation until it was too late. To be fair to Huxley, towards the end of his life, his tone changed, as he became more convinced that management of oyster beds needed to be introduced and recognised the dangers inherent in certain practices. In his opinion, the bounties of the oceans were considered inexhaustible and nature left to its own devices, in the true spirit of free trade and liberalism, was almost infinitely resilient and could adapt to any pressure imposed by man so that the idea of any threat of overfishing was totally rejected. Long ago were the halcyon days of seas, brimming with all kinds of fish and molluscs, and laissez-faire politics that shunned any form of regulation on fishing, best exemplified by the opinions of one of the intellectual giants of the 19 th century, Thomas Huxley, an autodidactic natural scientist, who dubbed himself “Darwin’s bulldog” because of his staunch defence of the latter’s controversial ideas, and who fathered a long line of Huxley geniuses. ![]() Berio, Spectrally resolved Michelson stellar interferometry I Exact formalism in the multispeckle mode, Journal of the Optical Society of America A, vol. The industry has not always employed Filipino crew members in these numbers. It's as if every person in the entire city of Orlando woke up, drove to Miami, and signed contracts to ship out on cruiseliners. The number of Filipinos currently living on vessels is roughly 240,000. The Philippines provides more seafarers to the global labor market than any other country in the world, accounting for approximately a fifth of 1.2 million maritime workers. "'When they hear that Filipinos are coming, they're happy.'" According to one of his papers, one shipmate told him: "'Filipino seaman are famous for them.that's why they like us, why they keep asking for us,'" he said. One 1999 study found that out of 314 randomly selected Filipino seamen in the port of Manila, 180, or 57 percent, said they had them.Īccording to McKay's interviews, danger of infection and resulting pain seemed to be worth their reception by droves of Brazilian prostitutes. In the extremely limited body of academic literature on this topic, there aren't many numbers. Mckay was shocked to learn that it still existed in what, based on his extensive conversations with Filipino seafarers, seemed like great numbers. Apparently, it was also practiced in Thailand and Indonesia, but vanished from the historical record in the mid-17th century, when men bowed to the pressures of Islam and Christianity. Italian scholar Antonio Pigafetta accompanied Ferdinand Magellan and his crew on their explorations and journaled about a similar behavior in what is currently southern Philippines and Borneo. The practice is unique to Southeast Asia and dates back to at least the 16th century, though no one is sure if it has been continuous. One shipmate told McKay that others have four, one on top and bottom and on both sides, "like the sign of the cross." Another said: "I have a friend at home, you know what his nickname is?" McKay recalled. Some have one on top or bottom, and others have both. There are also different preferred locations for insertion. A designated crew member boils them in hot water to sterilize them, and then performs the procedure. "This 'secret weapon of the Filipinos,' as a second mate phrased it, has therefore obviously something to do," Lamvik wrote in his thesis, "'with the fact that 'the Filipinos are so small, and the Brazilian women are so big' as another second mate put it."Īccording to University of California, Santa Cruz labor sociologist Steve McKay, who traveled extensively on container ships with Filipino crews in 2005 for his research on the masculine identity in the shipping market, raw materials for the bolitas can range from tiles to plastic chopsticks or toothbrushes. Many Filipino sailors make small incisions in their penises and slide tiny plastic or stone balls - the size of M&M's - underneath the skin in order to enhance sexual pleasure for prostitutes and other women they encounter in port cities, especially in Rio de Janeiro. And soon, conversations turned to perhaps the most fascinating part of the Filipino seafaring identity, the little-known and barely studied sexual practice of "bolitas," or little balls. It was in this type of loose, booze-flowing setting that he learned the most about the lives of his shipmates. ![]() He belted out the lyrics to "House of the Rising Sun." To crack the cultural mystery of any total institution, you have to go inside, he reasoned. When Norwegian anthropologist Gunnar Lamvik first began living in Iloilo city, a seafaring haven in the southern Philippines, he sensed he wasn't getting the richest and most detailed information about the shipping experience from interviews with his neighbors, who were home on two-month vacations from 10 months at sea. led by Charles P.The Philippines is a top supplier of seafarers (Wikimedia Commons) ![]() LA Times Crossword SeptemAnswers Latest Crossword Clues.# Hindu mystic crossword clue report this ad Search for: Daily Puzzle Side Special: Candyman will shoot hit cane forward extending a lot of distance, similar to canes used to drag people off of a stage.
